Student Society of Health System Pharmacists
Student Society of Health System Pharmacists (SSHP) works to increase interest in health-system pharmacy by building and honing clinical skills. We encourage and educate students interested in health-system pharmacy about careers within hospitals, health maintenance organizations, long-term care facilities, home care and other health care settings. Last year, the chapter held a social with KCHP allowing students valuable time to network with local area pharmacists. SSHP offers a program through KCHP that allows for pharmacy students to shadow pharmacists at different hospitals located in Kansas City, Lawrence, Salina and Wichita, as well as Ball’s Foods locations in the area. We are affiliated nationally with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and at the state level with the Kansas Council of Health-System Pharmacists (KCHP).
We invite pharmacists to speak at our meetings and discuss the current trends in pharmacy practice. We host a variety of guests, from small hospitals to large medical institutions, presenting on topics ranging from the importance of Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative to working as an emergency room pharmacist.
We strive to provide information and resources to encourage students to pursue residencies. We invite area residency directors to showcase their residency programs during our meetings and current and former residents to share their experiences so members know what to expect during the application process.
The ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in December features a residency showcase with representatives from nearly every residency in the country. Most students considering a residency travel for this event in their P3 and/or P4 year. SSHP hosts a Clinical Skills Competition each fall, in which teams of two students compete to put their clinical skills to the test. They review a patient case and are challenged to produce a treatment plan using knowledge gained from the classroom. The winning team receives free registration to the Midyear Meeting and competes at the national competition.
Each semester, we host Medication Brown Bag at a hospital or facility in the area. At this event, patients bring in a brown paper bag filled with their medications. With pharmacist oversight, SSHP members interview the patients and answer questions about their medications. We counsel patients on the proper use and make recommendations to optimize care, and provide each patient with a medication list they can take to their medical appointments.
